ABILENE, Texas — The Abilene community is mourning the tragic loss of Michael Menjares, a 17-year-old resident who died early Sunday morning in a single-vehicle rollover crash on West Lake Road. The fatal incident also left four other teenagers injured and has prompted an ongoing investigation by local authorities.
According to the Abilene Police Department, emergency responders were called to the 6500 block of West Lake Road shortly after midnight following reports of a serious crash. Upon arrival, officers discovered a Toyota RAV4 that had left the roadway, entered a grass drainage ditch, and rolled over with five occupants inside.

Authorities confirmed that Michael Menjares was pronounced dead at the scene. The four other occupants of the vehicle were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash. Their current conditions have not yet been publicly released.
Preliminary findings from investigators indicate that the SUV was traveling southbound when it began to swerve to the right before leaving the roadway. Officials stated that intoxication does not appear to have been a contributing factor, though the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.
